Setoda Lemon Marathon 2026 — Event Report

Hello, this is Yu from Shiomachi Kikaku.

On February 22, 2026, we successfully held the 4th edition of the Setoda Lemon Marathon.
This year, a record-breaking 1,549 runners took part, filling the town with much energy and movement.

While this was our largest event to date, what matters most to us is not the scale, but the kind of time and experience this day creates in Setoda.
We hope that more people can encounter the beauty of the local landscape, while the community comes together to welcome them.
At the same time, we want this day to offer something meaningful for local residents as well — a reason to step outside, reconnect with their town, or even for those who have left to be reminded of Setoda.

A sunny day, with almost 20°C warmth — the race begins

Under clear skies, runners from across Japan made their way along the seaside course, stopping at aid stations to enjoy local flavors.
After finishing, many stayed on, walking through the town, exploring shops, and spending time in Setoda.

Along the route, local residents stood outside their homes and shops, waving and cheering.
It was reassuring to see this familiar scene — something that has grown year by year — continue to take shape again.

Beyond the Finish Line

This year, we introduced vouchers that could be used at local shops and the market.
Rather than ending the experience at the finish line, we designed the event so that people would stay, explore, and engage with the town.

In many ways, the marathon extended beyond a single event — becoming a shared moment across Setoda.

This year also marked progress in our environmental initiatives.
Through a locally rooted carbon offset system, we utilized “J-Blue Credits®” linked to blue carbon projects in the Seto Inland Sea, offsetting part of the event’s emissions.

More than simply balancing emissions, this approach connects the marathon to ongoing efforts to restore and sustain the surrounding natural environment.
As an event held in this landscape, we believe running and caring for this place should continue to be naturally connected.

A race that belongs to the town

From around 400 participants in its first year to over 1,500 today, the marathon has grown steadily.
Even so, our goal has never been to become a “large-scale race,” but rather a race that fits this town.

A day that both runners and residents look forward to returning to.
If that continues, the marathon will naturally become part of Setoda’s everyday landscape.

We were especially moved to hear that some participants returned to running through this event, having once taken part in races on the island years ago.
Moments like these, where time reconnects people, are what we hope will continue to grow.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the local community, volunteers, staff, and all the runners who joined us.

We hope that February in Setoda continues to be a reason for people to return.
