The name SOIL reflects our wish to create fertile ground—where people and ways of living can take root and coexist, like the many lifeforms that share a single patch of earth. SOILは、ホテルを起点に、食や仕事、日常と旅が交わる場所を徒歩圏内に点在させる複合的な拠点の集合体だ。そこには観光地としての強い演出ではなく、誰かが世話をしている鉢植えのように、静かでさりげない関係性が息づいていることを目指している。
A place shaped by a single purpose becomes depleted over time. But where diversity is allowed to mix, ferment, and find balance, whether in the city or the countryside—something richer can grow. "SOIL"という名前には、多様な生きものが共存する土壌のように、人と営みが混ざり合い、根を張る環境をつくりたいという思いを込めた。単一の目的や機能だけを育て続ければ、土は痩せていく。
Plants quietly breathing in the alleyways form gentle connections, woven by human hands. SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel draws its inspiration from the neighborhood's unique culture of back-alley gardening. 路地裏に息づく植物たちは、人の手が静かにつながりを生む。SOIL Nihonbashi Hotelは、日本橋人形町の路地裏園芸という文化からインスピレーションを得ている。
When the scent of citrus begins to drift softly across the island, the sea breeze almost feels tinged with orange. The ocean is still a deep blue, the greenery is alive and bright—and somehow, everything—nature, creatures, even the air—feels happy. The island, just as it always is, seems to be in an especially good mood. 島じゅうに柑橘の香りがふわっと広がって、潮風が、なんだかオレンジ色に見えてきちゃうくらい。海の色はまだ濃くて、緑は元気で、自然も、生きものたちも、なんだかうれしそう。いつもの島が、ちょっとだけごきげんに見える。
As the marathon drew closer, I found myself at her house more often. And every time I left, she handed me a bag of citrus—onis, hirashima, marunashi. With each visit, the island grew a little nearer. マラソン大会がきっかけで近づいた。あたたかく、そして気前がいい。会うたびにみかんを持たせてくれた。おにぎり、ひらめ、まるなし。一回ずつ、この島が少し近くなった。
Sailing required waiting for favorable winds and tides. These periods of waiting became time for staying, trading, and social exchange. In Setoda, shio signifies not only a material substance, but also time, duration, and exchange. 船で海を渡るには風や潮を待つ必要があった。そうした待機の時間は、単なる停滞ではなく、人々が滞在し、商いを行い、交流を深める時間でもあった。瀬戸田にとって、"しお"は、物質であると同時に、時間であり、滞在であり、交流を含んでいた。
To reconsider Setoda through the lens of shio is not simply to look back on its industrial past. It offers a way to reframe the relationship between land and people. 瀬戸田を"しお"という視点から捉え直すとき、それは過去の産業を懐古することではない。土地と人との関係性を再考するための概念として、"しお"を位置づけ直すことができるのではないか。
Carrying nutrients from mountains and forests, they nourish the bay. Their healthy growth is proof that nutrients from the forest are delivered to the sea by the rivers. 川は山や森の栄養を受け止めながら海へと注ぎ込み、油谷湾を肥沃な環境へと育ててきました。森の栄養が川を通じて海へと届けられている確かな証しなのです。
Time moves quietly inside the storehouse. Old beams stretch overhead. The ceiling rises high, opening the space in silence. Though it has been renewed, the weight of time still lingers—and that is what shapes the air of this place. 蔵の中に、時間が流れている。古い梁が頭上に広がり、天井は高く、静かに開けている。新しくなったのに、時間の重さが残っている。それがこの場所の空気をつくっている。
It's humbling. Without the growers, there's no food. The same vegetable, grown by different people, can taste completely different. 農家がいなければ、食材はない。同じ野菜でも、つくる人によってまるで違う味になる。野菜には手間がかかる。愛情がいる。でも手をかけないと、味が出ない。
